Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice follows Senua, a Pict warrior who ventures into Helheim to rescue the soul of her dead lover from the goddess Hela. Developed in collaboration with neuroscientists and people who experience psychosis, the game presents a groundbreaking depiction of mental illness through its audio design and visual effects. The voices in Senua's head (known as Furies) were recorded using binaural audio technology to create a truly immersive and unsettling experience.
The game blends psychological horror with Norse mythology and Celtic culture, creating a unique dark fantasy setting. Combat is intentionally brutal and challenging, reflecting Senua's fragile mental state. The permadeath mechanic (though not what it initially appears) adds tension to the experience.
